Application
Due to the unique physical and chemical properties of Sc2O3 products, they have been well applied and developed in many high-tech and industrial sectors since the 80s of the 20th century. At present, the application status of Sc2O3 in alloys, electric light sources, catalysts, activators and ceramics in China and the world is described below.
Applications in alloys
At present, the aluminum-scandium alloy (Al-Sc) made of scandium and aluminum has the advantages of low density (Sc is 3.0g/cm3, Al is 2.7g/cm3, high strength, high hardness, good plasticity, corrosion resistance and strong thermal stability, etc., therefore, it has obtained better application in the structural parts of missiles, aerospace, aviation, automobiles and ships, and gradually turned to civilian use, such as sports devices (hockey and baseball handles), computers and mobile phone cases, etc., which have the characteristics of high strength, high rigidity and light weight, and are of great practical value.
Application in new electric light source materials
Pure Sc2O3 is converted into ScI3 and then combined with NaI to make a new third-generation electric light source material, which is processed into scandium-sodium halogen lamp for lighting. Under the action of high voltage, the scandium spectrum line is blue, the sodium spectrum line is yellow, and the two colors cooperate with each other to produce light close to sunlight, so that the light has the advantages of high luminosity, good light color, power saving, long life and strong fog breaking power.
Applications in laser materials
The emission power of the third-generation laser made of it is 3.0 times higher than that of lasers of the same volume, and the laser device has reached high power and miniaturization, which has increased the output power of laser oscillation and improved the performance of the laser.
Applications in electronic materials
Pure Sc2O3 can be used as an oxidation cathode activator for color TV CRT cathode electron gun, and the effect is good. Spray a layer of 1 mm thick Ba, Sr and Ca oxide layer at the upper end of the cathode of the color tube, and disperse a layer of 0.1 mm thick Sc2O3 on top. In the oxide cathode, due to the reaction between Mg, Sr and Ba, Ba is reduced, the released electrons are more active, and a large current electron is emitted, so that the phosphor emits light, which can increase the current density by 4 times compared with the cathode without Sc2O3 coating, make the TV picture clearer, and increase the cathode life by 3 times. The amount of Sc2O3 for each 21-inch imaging cathode is 0.1mg. At present, this cathode has been used in some countries in the world, such as Japan, which can improve market competitiveness and promote the sales of TV sets.
