Magnesium acetate is an organic salt with the structural formula Mg(CH3COO)2. It is usually tetrahydrate and has the appearance of colorless monoclinic crystals with a density of 1.454 g/cm3 (anhydrous density is 1.42 g/cm3). Soluble in water, the aqueous solution is neutral or weakly acidic, soluble in crystal water at 80 °C. Deliquescence in moist air, weathering in a concentrated sulfuric acid dryer, dehydration at 100°C. Used as an analytical reagent, sodium magnesium acetate is prepared to determine the sodium content in a substance. It is also used in medicine, catalysts, etc. Magnesium acetate crystals can be precipitated by magnesium carbonate and acetic acid.

Applications

1. It is used as a raw material for chemical reagents and pharmaceuticals, and a catalyst for organic synthesis.
2. It is used to prepare magnesium uranyl acetate and analytical reagent. The product is highly toxic. The LC50 for intravenous injection in mice was 18mg/kg.
3. Magnesium uranium acetate is made with uranium acetate for the determination of sodium.
4. Used as analytical reagent, such as precipitant.
5. It is used as a snow melting agent .
