Ferrous sulfate is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula FeSO4 and a white powder with no odor. Its crystal hydrate is heptahydrate at room temperature, commonly known as "green alum", light green crystals, weathered in dry air, oxidized to brown basic iron sulfate on the surface in humid air, becoming tetrahydrate at 56.6 °C, and monohydrate at 65 °C. Ferrous sulfate is soluble in water and almost insoluble in ethanol. Its aqueous solution oxidizes slowly in the air when it is cold and oxidizes quickly when it is hot. The addition of alkali or dew can accelerate its oxidation. Relative density (d15) 1.897. It is irritating. Ferrous sulfate can be used as a chromatographic analysis reagent, drip analysis for the determination of platinum, selenium, nitrite and nitrate. Ferrous sulfate can also be used as a reducing agent, to make ferrites, to purify water, to polymerize catalysts, photographic plates, etc.

Applications

1. Used as paper sizing agent in the paper industry to enhance the water resistance and seepage resistance of paper;
2, soluble in water can make the water fine particles and natural colloids condensed into large flocculent, so as to remove from the water, so used as water supply and wastewater coagulant;
3, used as turbid water purifier, also used as precipitating agent, fixing agent, filler and so on. It is used as raw material (astringent) to suppress perspiration.
4, fire industry, with baking soda, foaming agent foam extinguishing agent;
5, analytical reagents, mordant, tanning agent, oil decolorizing agent, wood preservatives;
6, albumin pasteurization stabilizer (including liquid or frozen whole eggs, white or yolk);
7, can be used as raw materials for the manufacture of artificial gems and senior ammonium alum, other aluminate;
8, in the fuel industry, in the production of chromium yellow and lake dye as a precipitator, but also plays the role of solid color and filling agent.
9, used as an effective crosslinking agent for animal glue, and can improve the viscosity of animal glue. It is also used as the curing agent of urea-formaldehyde adhesives. 20% aqueous solution has a faster curing speed.
